Ikastola History

With a dream, determination and countless volunteer hours of work and research, Boiseko Ikastola, the only Basque pre-school outside of the Basque Country, began in October of 1998. A group of parents and educators with pride in the Basque heritage and a desire to see their children, as well as generations to come, learn the Basque language, made that dream a reality. Amoung many, an unending gratitude is accredited to Nere Lete and husband Chris Bieter, Janice Mainvil, James Sangroniz and wife Cathy Doherty, Toni Ansotegui, Dan Ansotegui and wife Chrissy Ralston Ansotegui, Tom Zabala, Jeanne Alzola, Patty Miller and Elena Marcuerquiaga-Cook for all of their amazing dedication and continued support more than 10 years ago that continues to this day.

The Basque Government also played a major role in the construction of Boiseko Ikastola with their financing of the first instructor, as well as supplying instructional materials based on a curriculum used in the Basque Country. The Basque Government still generously supports Boiseko Ikastola year after year.

Euskera is the language spoken at this total-immersion program, but not all of the children are of Basque heritage. It is a common belief that children learning a second language during the early stages of their lives develop important cognitive skills and will be better able to learn additional languages as they grow. A nurturing atmosphere, an accredited preschool, an experienced staff - Boiseko Ikastola, is poised to continue to improve its services and facilities to the community.

The Ikastola leases space in the St. Paul's Catholic Student Center across from the Boise State University campus. Our accommodations are spacious and welcoming.
